Few, however, know that the pyramids in Africa is not only in Egypt, similar structures can be found in the Sudan, in the territory of Meroe — the ancient city, located in the middle of the desert.
Approximately 200 km from Khartoum, in northern Sudan, between the rapids on the river Nile is a metropolis that slowly absorbs the desert. Once a rich and vibrant city, and now it is literally buried in the sand. However, until now seen on the surface of the top of the pyramid, which continue to amaze with their size and shape.
Around the VIII and to IV century BC was the capital of the kingdom of Meroe Kush, where he actively cultivated elements of Greek and Egyptian art and culture. At the beginning of the IV century BC was founded here Cushitic necropolis of the Kings and less than a century for unknown reasons, the city was abandoned.
Through the excavation of the ancient city, archaeologists discovered here present cemetery of the pyramid, which is located inside the burial chamber. The height of these structures built of sandstone up to 30 meters (about the height of a 10-storey building). The Meroe built 10 large and 50 smaller pyramids, which were buried mainly Cushitic rulers. Overall, the site of the necropolis can be found more than 400 tombs.
The necropolis consists of three parts: the Southern Cemetery, where the royal pyramids 9 (owned by four kings, five kings) and 195 smaller tombs; Northern Cemetery consists of 41 royal pyramids, which were buried kings, queens and their families; Western Cemetery is the final resting place of people not related to the royal family — there are 133 graves.
It should be noted that not only the pyramids, but the entire city of Meroe well preserved, despite the almost 2.5 thousand years forgotten. Here you can see the ruins of the royal palace, the great temple of Amun and other religious buildings. Thanks to the work of archaeologists today you can learn how to look the streets and buildings of the city in the heyday of the kingdom.
In 2011, the archaeological site at Meroe was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, the journey to the Sudan today — not the cheapest, and most importantly not the safest fun and dare to see the ancient city not everyone can.
